Asian Glossy Starling
If you have subscribed or ran across my photo blog, the Digital Puto, you might have seen this photo before. I took this photo from the Ateneo Jacinto Campus in Davao last March 2008. I’ve been calling these creatures as “Birds of the Wild” since I have no idea what species these black-feathered avians are.
Just few hours ago, Van, a blogger from Cebu, helped me identify these creatures. According to the comment he left on my Multiply page, these birds are called Asian Glossy Starlings or Aplonis panayensis (WikiPedia). These creatures are abundant in countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. The habitat of these creatures are tropical rainforests and moist lowland forests.
I’m wondering what these birds are doing in the city’s urban area.

Wow ur lucky to take a pic of that rare birdie
i don’t think its rare. andami nila sa school namin eh.
Baka migratory birds to! or wala lang… taking a vacation lang guro ang mga to! hehehhe
that could be one possibility.
oo nga.. historic achievement to.. malay mo extinct na pala lahat ng ganyan ngayon
woooooooooot!
baka endangered na to kaya lumipat.. or baka tama si Obnoxious Queer hehe..
Walang leaves iyong tree. Parang fall season. Siguro very frisky ang mga birds na ito – locked up in a deadly case of fatal attraction. Kaya nalagas ang leaves sa all consuming passion nila. Ay sus, nambingtang na nagproject pa…hehehe. Excellent photograph.
yeah parang fall. 4pm ko kinunan yan kaya medyo nakadagdag sa “fall” effect yung lighting ng hapon. hehehhe.
thanks sa comment
Woo0t! Nice one Winston.
hahaha. so my name is included! haahah. nice post. Post more bird posts!! hehehe.
Did-U-Know: You can tell if the area is close to civilization or near-urban if you see these birds. This is according to my uncle from WBCP (Wild Bird Club of the Philippines)
wow. astig ka talga. you know a lot about birds. hahaha. pag may makuha uli akong shots ng birds, i’ll post them immediately.
and to the X, Micamyx, and orbel:
that bird is (like what winston said) very common. They have keen survival skills and are not migratory. Even poachers told me that they have difficulty catching one. If I may say, they are the smaller versions of the Large Billed Crow.
