Kalabasa, Sayote, atbp.

How old are you when you started eating veggies? What was the first vegetable you ate? Were you forced by your parents to eat veggies?
We were having dinner at F Word resto in Makati when Mica started the conversation about kalabasa. We were served with Pakbet Soup which reminded us on how we, when we were still in our childhood, started eating the child-friendly kalabasa.
You see, when I was still a kid, the only veggie I eat is kalabasa. My aunt would always force me to eat that eeeww green malunggay. I started eating the yellow veggie when I was 4-years old. They promised me a 20-20 vision when I eat yellow fruits and vegetables. Since kalabasa is not as awful as the malunggay, I gave it a try.
Kalabasa became my favorite vegetable since then. Everytime my lola cooks veggies, I always see to it that all the kalabasa in our dish goes to me. Also, when my teachers ask the class if we eat vegetables, I always raise my hand and proudly declare to the class that I eat kalabasa. It’s love at first taste I guess.
When I was in high school, my appetite for vegetable improved. I started eating sayote, potatoes and carrots. Later, I became so adventurous that I tried eating ampalaya and lettuce. My lola said ampalaya helps in preventing anemia. I’m not even sure if I have one but when I was in grade school, my other Lola, who’s a doctor, would regularly send me some ferric sulfate, an anti-anemia medicine.
At present, i have not completed my Bahay Kubo yet. There are still a few veggies that I don’t eat, labanos and patola are among them.
