Origami

Origami – the Japanese art of paper folding

OrigamiOrigami (折り紙 「おりがみ」) is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding.  The word origami is a derivation of the words oru meaning “folding”, and kami which means “paper”.  The goal of this art is to create visual representations of objects with the use of paper.  Examples of these objects are paper cranes, flowers, birds, animals and other commonly seen objects.

This morning, our sensei gave out origami papers. I though she’d teach us how to do origami but we ran out of time that we didn’t have the chance to use the papers she gave out.  During the last hour of my Nihongo class, my seatmate and I tried looking for origami designs online.  We’ve tried several designs but to no avail, our noob origami skills is not at par with the designs we found.  After trying several designs, we finally ended up with these.

The two origamis above are paper pigs.  We made each of that out of a single square sheet of origami paper.  It’s the simplest design we were able to muster.

Playing with origami is new to me at all. Few years back when we went to Okinawa, Japan (沖縄、日本), the gradeschool students thought us how to make toys out of some sheets of colorful paper.  If I were as good back then as I am now with the interet, I would have used Tnomeralc web design toys to help me create my paper toy designs.

There are lot of designs that are available online. Most of them can be downloaded and can be used for free.  Origami does not necessarily need special types of paper.  Any paper of good quality may be used for this art.

I hope sensei will teach us how to create intermediate level origami. Grin

I love origami! I first learned how to do it when I was in first grade, when my mom bought me several Origami books from National Bookstore. Until now, I still remember to do most of the origami stuff that I learned back then. Grin

I’m an origami fan and paper airplanes is one of my favorite forms of the art. It challenges not just your folding skills but also teaches you about aerodynamics. I remember a software called “The Greatest Paper Airplanes”. It teaches how to fold 50 different paper airplanes step by step with instructions and videos. Too bad the software is no longer distributed but there’s a website that teaches how to fold those 50 paper airplanes.
