How to get a good hosting company

A few of us in the blogosphere and the internet industry are aware of the existence of cheap web hosting services in the internet. Many of us pay hundreds of dollars in getting a good hosting company.
Few weeks ago, we had problems maintaining the availability of our PRC Board Exam Results (www.prcboardexamresults.com) site. A day before the NLE Results were released, our servers crashed and was down for a couple of days. The hosting company which hosted our site did not send any information on how are servers crashed. At first we thought it was the excessive traffic we received that day which caused the servers to crash but it was not. The problem went on in the following days. We often receive several downtimes after the first incident. It was a tragedy for us. We lost a lot of potential traffic and earnings from these downtimes. But the worst scenario hit us. After the last server crash we experienced, all of our files were deleted. The hard disk where our files were hosted failed. We immediately asked for the promised back-up from our webhost but they were not able to provide it.
From this experience, we learned a lot of lessons to consider when choosing a good web hosting company.
- Get a Web Hosting company with a good reputation. Learn from the experiences of other people. Research for web host reviews.
- Compare your Bandwidth requirements and the bandwidth allocation of your hosting plan.
- Make sure your web hosting company provides your site requirements.
- Use commonly used admin panels like cPanel and Plesk.
- Get a good value hosting.

no money back guarantees? transfer to a good hosting solutions. haven’t made the move, but considering soon.. cheers.

what’s your webhost that caused your site to crash? you should have mentioned it to fully enunciate your post.

I agree but we also have to consider the amount of traffic for the site, we can’t blame the host for our being “popular” on the web. That’s the downside. It would also be great for the hosting company to at least give us a notification before our goes down and “real time” but I guess, they have their reasons… Life really is full of surprises!
@lisa: i’m using Marvins Web for this blog. wala naman pong problems. Anyway, if you are having problems with their hosting service, you can email marvin for support. Based on my experience, the marvin’s tech support is great.
@beejing: I agree. My other site crashed several times. Seems like the hosting service provider we got for that site was not able to stick with their word. *sigh*
Always consider your own backup solution as your hosting provider may have backups but cannot restore them as fast as your personal copies. If you’re using WordPress, consider the handful of backup plugins that can automate the job for you.
