Blogging Tool: Windows Live Writer
I recently discovered a new blogging tool which can make our blogging experience better and more exciting. Windows Live Writer is a WYSIWYG standalone application which is used in authoring blog content. This blogging application supports a wide range of blogging platforms which uses API’s for content publishing. Among those currently supported by Windows Live Writer are Blogger, TypePad, WordPress and LiveJournal.
The Interface
Windows Live Writer’s interface is similar to that of WordPress’ built-in WYSIWIG editor, an interface layout which is quite familiar to almost everyone. Also, the necessary tools and functionality are all laid in one screen, including your Weblog’s options and post parameters.
When editing or making an entry, you can have the option to edit using your blog’s default layout or use the applications normal layout.
Setting up your blog
Setting up your blog with Windows Live Writer is a breeze. The application would only ask for your username, password and blog URL and then it automatically detects the type of blogging platform associated with your blog.
Windows Live Writer does not also limit you to a single blog. You can add as many blogs as you can. The number of blogs that you can associate with the application is virtually unlimited.
Publishing
Within the application, you can configure post parameters such as categories, publish date, keywords (or tags), author, post slug, password, pings, comments, excerpts and optional trackback URLs.
After doing the post, you are given the option to Save Draft on you local hard drive, Post the entry as a draft on your web blog, or publish the entry on your web blog. Also, when publishing your entry, all images attached to that post are also published. The application also creates thumbnails and large formats of your images.
Added Features
One great feature I love with Windows Live Writer is its capacity to accommodate third party plugins. These plugins add more functionality to your Live Writer. My favorite plugin is the Polaroid Picture plugin which converts your ordinary photo into a polaroid photo. You can also have a plugin where you can insert a map, a video, a digg link, a picasa album or a plugin which can easily create a Wikipedia link to the highlighted word.
Conclusion
Windows Live Writer is a neat application which is quite helpful for us bloggers. It can make our blogging experience more exciting, more productive and more efficient. It’s also helpful when you want to draft blog posts offline and publish it later when an internet connection is available. My last five posts were all created using Live Writer and so far, I’m happy about it.
You can download a FREE copy from here or you may also want to check their Windows Live Gallery which has a section for downloading Live Writer plugins.
