Yagit’s concept of self-presents

For those who are close to me, you might already know that I often reward myself with self-presents. Self-presents are basically gifts that I give myself for a remarkable thing that I have accomplished or during special occasions. Most of the time, these items are unnecessary and way off my usual budget. I usually give get self-presents on my birthday, during Christmas, or when I have done any form of personal achievement or any remarkable accomplishments that deserves to be rewarded. It’s a personal rewards system that I have implemented for the past years.

One of the reasons why I decided to spend my birthday in Singapore is that I wanted to buy the Ray Ban carbon fiber frames that I have been wanting to get a couple of months ago.  Though it’s available locally, I thought I could save some bucks if I get it in Singapore. It would have been a perfect self-present for my birthday. Unfortunately, the regular price of the Ray Ban frames in Singapore is just the same as the displayed prices in our malls here in Manila. I could even get a 20% discount if I get it from certain shops.

Since it is unwise to get the frames from Singapore, I decided to put the purchase on hold until I get back to Manila. The only items I was able to buy were the colognes and some small stuff I found at the airport’s duty free shops before we left SG.

Just this morning, I did something crazy — I bought THE self-present for my birthday. It was crazy because it was an unplanned purchase, unnecessary, way off my usual budget. It was nothing but a perfect self-present for my birthday — my previous phone’s successor, the Samsung Galaxy S II.

It’s an improvement of its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S. I was talking to Nina the night before when I decided to get the Samsung Galaxy S II. This morning, immediately after I received my money, I called my supplier (the same supplier where I bought my White BlackBerry Bold) to deliver the brand new SGSII before lunch. That’s how I got my new toy.

Though these types purchases may sound crazy and unreasonable, but I have found several reasons that I think justifies the concept of  ”Self-Presents”:

  • It’s a lame valid excuse to buy something that is under normal circumstances is considered unnecessary.
  • It’s a reward for something remarkable that you have done.
  • Since it’s a reward system, it can become a motivating factor for working harder.
  • It’s the perfect opportunity to splurge on something that you really want.
  • It may sound selfish but in reality it isn’t. When buying self-presents, you will build the mindset that other people ought not to give you presents (because you’re getting your own) — you’ll free yourself from selfish expectations.
  • When buying an expensive self-present, you won’t feel guilty because you’re spending for a gift, a present.
I have listed a few other reasons earlier but my post got accidentally deleted from my BlackBerry after it self-restarted.
How about you? Do you have your own system of self-presents?

Just like what you said on FB..”Ikaw na ang magastos”

  2. nina says:

I love me so much that I shower myself with presents lol.

My travels are all self-gifts. It makes me happy, which in turns makes me more tolerable to live with. So.. I guess I’m doing the people around me a favor?

No need to justify your gift. You worked hard, you deserve the treat :D

  3. Winston says:

Yez. You might think it’s selfish but it’s not :P Imagine, they don’t have to think of something to give you na coz you have thought of it na. They won’t get the trouble pa of getting it ‘coz you’re getting it for yourself. hahaha. crazy thoughts.

  4. Andrew says:

I am known to splurge on myself almost excessively, that my family and friends think that I have “everything” and feel that they don’t need to buy me gifts. Unlike you, it makes me sad. I still prefer to receive gifts from others, regardless of price or size and whatnot, because, for that fleeting moment, it makes me feel a little bit special.

    • Winston says:

hahaha. of course I still love receiving gifts kuya…. gimme gimme gimme! :D well this post is just a lame excuse to convince myself that these unnecessary expenses are justified. hahaha

  5. XyZa says:

Oh thank you for giving me that justification. hehehehe After all we all worked hard for it.

And I so agree with what you said “I’m just getting myself what I didn’t experience or didn’t have when I was younger. :)” – that’s what I always tell myself when unknowingly i bought something unplanned. hehehe…

    • Winston says:

hahaha. if you think of it, it’s a lame excuse to splurge. but who cares, after all, it’s our hard earned money. hahaha. Thanks for the comment ^__^

  6. Meynard says:

woooot. self-presents are your personal desires. well it’s not bad. I’m doing it too sometimes. :D But I notice, your self-presents are mostly gadgets and other techy stuff. :D

  7. Micamyx says:

Although i often tease you for buying gadgets (gadgets na naman?!?), i am proud of you because you buy these self-presents using your hard-earned cash :D I agree with you in most points. Don’t feel guilty hihi.

I smiled upon reading this personal post of yours. Wala lang :D 8-)

My system is quite easy. “I buy things that I want, when I want, it’s my money… why should I feel guilty?”

As long as you’re happy, that is what matters.

And besides, it’s your birthday and you deserve it.

Nobody can take that away from you. :)

I agree that rewards system is effective for boosting one’s motivation toward greater productivity. Material things/ gadgets aren’t just a simple stuffs.

Waah! I love your post sir Winst! naka relate ako although I can’t afford that very expensive gadget but there are times mahilig talaga ako bumili ng mga mamahaling bagay basta abot-kaya naman sa budget ko. Yes, it’s a self-present, may special occasion or wala as long as ur happy with it. di naman tayo nagnakaw. Hard-earned cash ika nga… agree ko sa post mo.

I just remember that I have a friend who really hates me right now for a small thing lang naman. tapos she posted that i’m materialistic daw which di naman related sa argument namin. hehehe!

    • Winston says:

hahaha. getting stuff you want doesn’t make you a materialistic person. not unless if you your material stuff eat you as a person. ;)

hahaha. per masaya bumili ng stuff!

      Thanks sa comment ^__^

  13. Rodel says:

    • Winston says:

hahaha. siguro one reason why I can do these kind of stuff is that I’m single. I only worry for myself. Things will change once I embrace adulthood. :)

  14. nursingmania says:

  15. Dorm Boy says:
